We are at a small rural high school in the foothills. Many students do not go onto college, but we are trying to change that. We want to get kids more involved in sports and extra curricular activities to help improve their self esteem and show them that they can do anything. Track is great for this!
Many of our students currently spend their free time playing video games and wasting time on the computer. We want to get the kids back outdoors and exercising and interacting with each other, instead of with technology.
We have many low socioeconomic students and we know that track is a great opportunity for all students, because anyone can do it and you don't need a lot of specialized equipment or training, initially.
There are many students that are involved with alcohol and drugs, partially due to the fact that they say that there is nothing else to do in a small town. We want to offer a healthy, fun alternative to the bad decisions that some are making.
