My teaching partner and I have a Junior High School class of students living with Autism. Each and every one of our students are so smart and full of life, but they struggle to communicate. This trouble with communication makes it very difficult for them to show what they know. It also limits their ability to be a part of the school community. Our students also have difficulties staying on task and understanding content. As special educators, we are constantly accessing resources that allow us to modify and accommodate the curriculum for our students. We require materials that interest our students and appeal to their strengths. Our students have the abilities to excel in very few aspects of their lives, and it is our job to help them figure out what that is.
90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, but because our school is in a higher income area, our classrooms do not get the funds that are set aside for low income schools.
