It can be challenging as a Special Education Teacher to find books that my older students truly enjoy reading. I have many 4th and 5th graders who are not yet able to read books that their classmates are, and many of the books they can read independently are not of interest to them since the books were written for a younger audience.
The AKJ Education website has books sorted by "Best Sellers" and they have created some amazing collections of books that my students would love. I am interested in the Guided Reading Collections aimed at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. Within those book collections, there are nonfiction and fictional texts. Some of the books I am most excited about are Inside Outside Upside Down by the Bernstain's (in the 1st grade collection), Young Cam Jansen and the Spotted Cat Mystery by David Adler (in the 2nd grade collection), Jackie Robinson and the Story of All Black Baseball by Jim O'Connor and Jim Butcher (in the 3rd grade collection), and Superfudge by Judy Blume (in the 4th grade collection). I truly feel there is a book for every student I service within these collections!
With a wide variety of books that we can read together and they can read independently, I'm much more likely to continue to inspire them to love reading as much as I do!
