I work at the only majority-black high school in all of Oregon. Our school is a middle-college program that focuses on getting students to experience college while they are still in high school. Most of the students we serve are on free/reduced lunch and are helped by other federal and state programs. Many students will be the first generation in their families to go to college, and even graduate high school. These students face issues of poverty and discrimination based on their race. They have the most "grit" of any student population I've ever worked with. They are talented, motivated, and have endured a lot. I just want to try and help them in any way that I can.
