With a major emphasis on reading for our campus this year, my fifth graders have been saturated with literature. We write in our Spill-It Spirals everyday. This is my version of journaling and building community. Then, we move on to Book Club. This is our time to read a small part of a book and have discussions in small groups. Next is the wonderful Read to Self time for 30 minutes. This is when students are allowed to read a book of their choice. Finally, I move to the reading lesson for the day, usually pulling some type of article for the week as a focus. With our testing season approaching, our students are in need of wonderful books that they can relate and connect to their life. I want them to be lost in the world of reading. All of them are not fans of reading, but my goal is for them to love it by they time they are 6th graders.
