My ESL students come from all around the world. I have 25 students speaking 18 different languages. My class is very fluid with students come at all different times of the year. Many have not been in school due to refugee camps, moving and helping their family. So we start with the basics add in a lot of life skills like how to read directions to make Macaroni and Cheese to ordering a hamburger for the first time.
They are amazing how they are eager to try new things and trust me to help them.
I had one student who read his first book as a 8th grader, "Hop on Pop". It took us months to make it but now he is a reader! That is power. They are the game changers for their family.
