I teach 7th grade math in the north county area of St. Louis and many of my students are considered 鈥渁t risk鈥 for not graduating high school. They come from low income households and every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from single parent homes where they are expected to assume adult level responsibilities around the home while their parent is gone, usually working a second job. A portion of our attendance area comes from Ferguson, MO, which has been well chronicled by the national media. Due to the strife in Ferguson, MO this past fall, creating a positive sense of community and motivating students have been very challenging. With all of the negativity swirling around the community as a result of of the unrest, my students are not very optimistic about their future. Cooperative learning gives them an opportunity to learn in an environment that helps them feel like they part of a team. They are often surprised with how much they know.
