Our classroom consists of fourteen students, six of those with special needs. Our students struggle from vision impairment, lack of social skills, and many other learning disabilities. The students are learning how to read, but have not mastered all the skills yet. Our students learn best when working in a small group of students and completing a hands-on activity. This helps build their language arts skills and their social skills at the same time. Our students also love working on laptops, so we are planning to begin allowing students to type stories that they write.
Our school is a small K-8 district. This year, there are five first grade classrooms and we are benefiting from small class sizes. In the past, we typically have 20-25 students in a class. Students receive more one-to-one attention in such a small class. However, we have noticed the negative effect of not being able to correctly socialize develop from not having more children in a classroom.
