My class is filled of 5th and 6th graders have such creative minds and love to learn more outside of their world.
All of my students have been making such great gains in their reading levels in these passed few months in non-fiction reading.
However, their fiction repertoire requires the greatest of need. I have incorporated the activity of Literature Circles to address this and they enjoy it so far! I hear group meetings discussing about having connections from the text to themselves, text to another text, text to the world, vocabulary noting, and creating visual representations of their reading!
Literature circles is a place of cooperative learning in which students help each other understand a text and make sense of it through various modes (illustrations, word decoding, summaries, and more). By having a greater library of books to choose from, students have more ownership and excitement with their read, which leads to deeper engagement, increased intrinsic motivation, and an opportunity for guided-decision making.
In order to keep this momentum, I would like to feed their growing minds with more up to date books and current popular fiction literature for their Literature Circles.
By donating to our project, you will help build the love of reading and creativity for these children of whom may not have the resources or opportunities outside of the classroom to do so. Updating our library of books will very much add to even more passionate and engaged book discussions!
