Having headphones will open up a whole new world of learning for my students! They will be able to access age-appropriate digital materials and texts that will read aloud to them even if they are not yet skilled readers. Students will be able to use text-to-speech and speech-to-text features that reinforce their reading and writing skills. They will also be able to access educational games and programs to practice and supplement concepts taught in class.
Headphones will provide independence and self-sufficiency so that my students can be active participants in achieving their academic goals. Currently, all students are assigned an IPad, and some students have inexpensive earbuds that parents or I have provided, but these break or tangle continually causing frustration and meltdowns. Earbuds also bother many of my students who have sensory, structural or hearing difficulties. The students prefer not to use them, but also cannot sustain attention in a busy classroom with many different voices and program sounds interfering with their learning.
With their own quality over-the-ear headphones, students will not be dependent on an adult reading material to them, or be stuck waiting for help when a teacher is busy with another student. They will have more opportunities to be included in the general education environment by accessing curriculum materials that have been individually modified for them. Students will be able to independently access digital resources and continue learning despite other distractions, transitions or disruptions that occur in the classroom.
