We are a rural school encompassing grades pre-k through grade 8. We have around 450 students total who come from families with all different kinds of backgrounds- white color, blue collar, professor's kids, and kids from families struggling just to get by. Our school has a great bond with our community and teachers often join together to support individual families in need, as well as community events.
In my role as a literacy specialist, I work with kids in grades kindergarten through fourth grade who are struggling to learn to read. Sometimes I work with students who just need a little "extra" to catch up with their peers, and they are part of my groups for a few months. Other students need ongoing support and may be part of my groups over several years.
