Teaching at a magnet school for the arts, students rarely have intrinsic motivation when it comes to mathematics. Incorporating the ares and real world scenarios into the classroom helps my students see the value of a solid mathematics foundation.
Students come from far and wide to attend this school, some traveling an hour or more on a school bus to get here! The population is 50% urban and 50% suburban, creating an atmosphere of diversity and acceptance. The students at my school all have an artistic major in which they participate everyday. These majors range from Musical Theater to Dance to Visual Arts. After completing a rigorous morning in their academic classes, they all attend their arts classes resulting in a day that is longer than that of a typical high school. Despite this long day, they arrive in the morning ready to learn. They appreciate when their rigorous academic day doesn't feel like work. They like to make learning fun!
