My students live in rival gang neighborhoods and, unfortunately, have seen more violence than any one person should have to endure...they are 2nd graders. Due to their environment they come to school without the basic academic foundations, and in some cases, the basic knowledge of what it means to be a student in a classroom. Educators in my building, me included, are working as hard as we can to get these children caught up with peers their own age (they come to us several years below grade level) so one day they will be college or job ready.
Fortunately, amazing technology assists us today with differentiating instruction so we can reach every child at their level. Our school district has provided our children with iPads in an effort to help us differentiate instruction in a manner that is engaging and meaningful for each individual student.
