As I introduced the novels we would be reading in class, "Hatchet" and "Roll of Thunder Hear My cry" I heard some sighs and lips smacking. They are great books, I wanted to tell them that but I stayed silent. I needed time to collect myself, I love reading and I want my students to love reading too. However, this love is not always going to happen through assignments.
These past two weeks I have been getting to know my students more through student surveys, class ice breakers, over hearing conversations, and talks with the kids.
It occurred to me that I can gift my students the love of reading. I would target their interests and reading levels and I would gift them a book that reminded me of them. No assignments, check-ups, or anything, simply a book they can highlight, write notes on and take home.
