I have been teaching second grade for 10 years and during this time my students have never attended art classes in our district due to budget cuts. Because of the lack of art in our elementary schools, my mother and I took it upon ourselves to create an extensive art unit. This unit has grown and morphed over the last 10 years into something we are quite proud of. During the unit of study, students learn about many different artists and their art styles that have influenced our world. Each year we look to add a new artist or art style to expose our students to. We wrap up the unit with a trip to the St. Louis Art Museum where students go on a scavenger hunt, make judgments about the art work, and then write about their experience.
