Although my school is located in one of the most affluent counties in our state, my students come from homes where their parents, or in many instances, a single parent struggles to make ends meet – for example 80% of my students qualify for free lunch and reduced lunch. Part of this economic struggle is related to the culturally diverse backgrounds of my students – 64% of my students are Hispanic and 24% are black with 69% of my students coming from non-English speaking homes. Not surprisingly, 100% of my students were not considered to be on grade level in reading based upon the results of last year’s state reading assessment; however, many are striving to overcome their reading deficiencies – especially those students for whom English is a second language – and my mission is to provide them with the reading skills, strategies and resources that will help them to make this goal a reality.
