Our students are a diverse group at a Brooklyn middle school. They participate in the Teach to One program through the organization New Classrooms. At the beginning of the year, all students take diagnostics to determine what skills they need to learn regardless of grade level, then they receive instruction in these areas throughout the year. Each day, students experience one skill in two different learning styles. Promoting group discussion and higher level thinking are tenets of the program. At the end of each day, students take an exit slip to see whether they need additional practice or have mastered the skill. Thus their math education is truly individualized. Last year our students showed on average about a year and a half of growth in one school year.
