The students I teach come primarily from an urban, lower income neighborhood. They are bombarded with issues that are way beyond their years- drugs, violence, sex, the responsibility of younger siblings- daily. Although school for many of them is a safe haven, they sometimes have difficulty shaking off the weight of what they have dealt with before they walk in our doors. They are fifth graders who, in many ways, have lived more than I have.
