Research has shown that African American children in low income areas tend to struggle academically due to lack of experiences. My students are determined to not let their circumstances define them. We don't want to just be seen in transition with "any ole book" in hand anymore. With the entire class having the same book, the door is open for meaningful discussions and discoveries. My students are enthusiastic about reading.
