My students are reading below the first grade level. I believe that all children should be given equity in education. It is a challenge to provide these equal opportunities when unfortunately every school is not funded equally.
My students will utilize these materials during shared reading and small group instruction. During a shared read aloud, students gather at their desk and listen to a story. At that time, I read a book out loud while modeling various reading strategies. While the teacher is modeling, the students are watching and learning. Therefore they require a book with pictures and text to understand the story elements.
During small group instruction students need their own book at their independent reading level. This will ensure students will be able to access a text to meet their varying needs. The result will be students will be able to identify the title, author, illustrator, front and back cover of the book.
Also, some students are learning their alphabet and their sounds Letter recognition is important because it enables beginning readers to figure out how printed text is associated with spoken language.
