Last spring, thanks to a successfully funded project on Donors Choose, which was matched by Dick's Sporting Goods, a brand new club soccer team was formed, made up almost entirely of refugee students. The team has played four games so far and still has many more to go, including the entire spring season. Despite coming from countries where soccer is the number one sport, almost all players on this team had never played a real soccer game before; they had never played with a referee and nets and white lines. In our district, soccer is not a school sponsored sport until high school. Although our students had played plenty of street soccer, they didn't know positioning or formal rules. They didn't understand what it meant to play on a team and work together. It's hard to make the high school team if you've never played in a real game. But with lots of hard work and good coaching, they have come a long way.
