"Alright Readers, grab your just right book and find a smart place to read." My students quickly walk to the classroom library and within minutes my shelves are bare. As they choose places around the room, my limited flexible seating options fill up in a blink of an eye. During independent reading time I roam the room and notice some of my students are disappointed with their book choice; all the new high interest books were taken before they were able to reach them. Within ten minutes of our reading session I see many students that would benefit from being able to move while reading begin to fade and lose interest.
My students need a larger selection of captivating stories so each student is able to find many books throughout the year that interest and challenge them. Expanding my library would help me meet my goal as a teacher to instill a love of reading in all students. Students would be able to recommend books to each other, create a stronger connection to reading, and become more confident in themselves as readers.
The bean bag chairs, wobble stools, and stability discs would all provide students with a larger variety of seating options. Students who need a comfy, quiet area to read can lounge on the bean bag chairs. While students who need their whole body engaged in the task at hand can rock on wobble stools as they read. The stability discs will provide slight movement to students while reading. All of these materials will enhance my students learning environment.
