ETK classrooms are required to provide outdoor playing and learning time. However, the weather in San Fernando Valley can get quite hot. Since school starts in August, we have longer periods of hot weather. Students still want to go outside, wether to paint some mammals, splash some reptiles at the water table, or roll playdoh into nutricious food.
Umbrellas can provide an escape from the sun. The canopy that is being used doesn’t move. So the sun still can get one side of the outdoor learning area or the other. Outdoor umbrellas are mobile and they have a tilting mechanism. They can be manipulated to give the protection from the sun rays. Students will realize that they are just like tiny little trees. Except when the sun moves the “shadow”, we can move our little trees.
