My students are either affluent or living in poverty; there seems to be no in-between. They are enthusiastic about learning, and come to school every day working to learn more.
With such a difference in my student population, it's challenging to ensure that all students in the class have equal opportunity to learn the same way, using the same resources.
As I seek new ways to improve my teaching and my students’ learning, I feel that my students would be better prepared as 21st century learners if they had access to more technology. I purchased two iPod shuffles for a listening station, but that purchase used the majority of my classroom supply funding. iPod shuffles help build reading fluency, however I have found that even after teaching and reteaching how to skip to a new book, students still have a difficult time figuring this out and a great deal of reading time is lost, as well as my reading group time as I have to stop my intervention support time.
