I teach a diverse group of first grade students. Fourteen of the twenty-two are English Language Learners representing nine countries and eleven languages other than English. Seventy-eight percent of my students are on free/reduced lunch. This is not out of the ordinary in our district. I work in a district that the New York Times stated was the most diverse in the nation.
A majority of my students do not have technology in their homes, which puts them at a disadvantage academically and in the future job market. It is my goal to provide sufficient access for students to learn and use technology in reading, writing, math, and science. We have access to Chromebooks, but they are difficult for several of my students to use and they do not have the apps I believe would move my students forward in math and science. Technology is engaging for students and the use of tablets will appeal to them.
