The two novels, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Lord of the Flies, will be used to round out our AP Literature curriculum.
Studies show that students who read actual pages from a book held in hand, retain information significantly better than reading off a screen. An article published in Scientific American cited that "screens and e-readers fail to adequately recreate certain tactile experiences of reading on paper that many people miss and, more importantly, prevent people from navigating long texts in an intuitive and satisfying way. In turn, such navigational difficulties may subtly inhibit reading comprehension" (Jabar, 2013).
Because of the issue with reading off of PDFs, coupled with students who don't always have the resources to locate these novels, and/or may not have transportation available to them to get to the library, providing these books will make a world of difference and my students will have access to canonized literature right here in the classroom.
By adding these two novels to the classroom library, students will not only have access to amazing literature, but these are two novels are wonderful examples and studies of human nature.
