By going back to an actual book that students can hold will help draw them into the history of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Many Oklahomans don't know the history of the African American culture that was once known as Black Wall Street and the destruction that caused this historical event on May 31, 1921. Not many know because for nearly 100 years, the truth has been covered up in Oklahoma history. The headlines and articles have been cut from the Tulsa World newspaper. Most that were alive then have passed away by now. This fictional novel by Oklahoma author Anna Myers brings awareness and life to an incredible event in our history. One that every Oklahoman should know about.
My students need to know that there is more to our history than Will Rogers, Garth Brooks, and Jim Thorpe. While those are important people who have shaped our state, the people and events that led to the Tulsa Race Massacre are too. Anna Myers has also agreed to be in communication with my students as we study this novel and time in Oklahoma history.
