The adjustable micropipettes will allow the students to accurately and precisely measure the very small amounts of reagents required for the labs without wasting any of the expensive consumable supplies.
The UV Transilluminator will let the students better view and measure the bands of DNA produced from the restriction enzyme digest and electrophoresis of the Lambda DNA, without which many bands are often difficult or impossible to see.
Both the micropipettes and the transilluminator will provide the students with a meaningful learning experience. For the Tranformation lab, students will be using restriction enzymes and inserting pGlo bioluminescent DNA into bacterial plasmids in an attempt to successfully perform bacterial transformation. For the Analysis of Lambda DNA lab, students will again be using restriction enzymes to cut up the Lambda DNA to measure and compare DNA fragments to known bands using gel electrophoresis.
