My students are a creative, thoughtful, and fiercely motivated group of first-graders. Approximately 96 percent of my students qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch, and most of our families live below the poverty line. As six and seven year-olds, my students are excited about working and learning with greater independence in the classroom. We are also working hard to develop a culture of self-respect and respect for others in the classroom. In learning how to work independently, I want my students to take ownership of and make healthy choices about their learning.
