Reading is the foundation of all learning. Our school focuses 120 minutes of the school day on reading instruction and interventions. During this block, there is a lot of independent reading time where students are responsible for their own reading and growth. While students are reading, I am able to work with small groups based on their reading levels. It is a constant struggle to locate books that range from K-3rd grade that students are interested and are on their level. These leveled library books would help to tame that struggle.
These books are also listed on Scholastic's Reading Counts inventory. This allows students to take a small online quiz at the conclusion of their reading. As students complete the quizzes, they receive individualized reports, earn points, certificates, and awards establishing motivation for students to take their reading seriously. I also receive a report that allows for me to hold students accountable for their own learning and celebrate their small successes.
