The students I teach come to me from a variety of home lives, with some of them never having seen art supplies. My classroom sits in the middle of a county where, according to the US Census Bureau, only 69% of students graduate high school, and furthermore, less than 12% receive a bachelor's degree. Art is an unnecessary expense - one that is not accounted for in the home, and certainly not provided as an experience in the school system. There is a lack of opportunity for students to interact with art, let alone create it.
