My ELL students enjoy having fun while learning. One way the LEGO building blocks will be used is to help students create conversations and to learn to speak and tell stories. Because writing is very difficult for my students, they will have opportunities to build LEGO scenes with a beginning, middle, and an ending. As they tell their stories to each other, it will become a writing activity where they will construct their stories using transitional words from what they have created with the LEGO. The LEGO blocks allow them to conceptualize and think through a story before they speak, and to understand the direction of their story when they write.
LEGObuilding blocks boost creativity and engagement in writing, speaking, listening, and reading, which are the four domains my ELL students focus on in class. One other way this project will be used is having students to create scenes for a story. The images would be imported into ebooks where each student would add narration, dialogue, and sound effects. Students would focus on developing language, grammar, and writing skills as they tell their stories. Once stories are completed, other classmates will listen and answer questions from the given story. Consequently, using the LEGObuilding blocks will help my students to be creative in their work as they learn how to write and speak English proficiently.
