My students come from the inner city where most of them (90%) fall below the poverty line. My students are hard working and enjoy school. Our school does not have a huge behavior problem, however, we have seen an increase over the last few months. A few other schools in our district have started a walking club and the have seen behavior problems go down. We also have a large population of overweight students in our school. The nurse has completed her screenings and an alarming number of students fall into the overweight category. There are very few free athletic programs offered outside our school and transportation is a huge issue for most of our students. Most of the parents of our students do work but they work the second and third shirt. They leave their children with older siblings and unfortunately video games and TV is the most popular activity.
