By having different choices of seating in our classroom, students can work around the room during the day. This helps reduce the amount of distractions and lack of focus students sometimes encounter in the classroom. Providing alternative seating options to my fifth graders allows them to have their own space to spread out and have room to work. Some students might find it comforting to rock on a wobble seat, while others enjoy a seat on the floor with a pillow or floor seat during group work.
By giving students different seating options, I am helping them begin to learn how to make appropriate choices about their own learning in the classroom. Having alternative seating also helps with engagement. By having higher engagement, students will be more successful.
