The 3D printer will increase the learning of students in AP biology, Phyiscal Anthropology, and even the Science Olympiad team.
In my class students will be able to search an almost endless variety of Human, Hominid (pre-human ex: Australopithecus), animal, and plant fossils online to download and print to the classroom. This will allow AP Biology students to analyze and draw conclusions about evolutionary relationships and create 3D cladograms and phylogenetic trees to show and present their hypothesis on the relationships. There are also many other ways in which this could be used in
In my Physical Anthropology class students would do many similar activities as listed above but with the focus on human evolution. Complete hominid Skull casts can be downloaded for free and printed for just a few dollars. To purchase these through a vendor like BoneClones.com it costs several hundred dollars. Students can even download specific archaeological artifacts to examine to better understand the cultures around the world and our human history.
In addition to understanding biology the printer will be used by the School Science Olympiad team to engineer unique products for the many build events. Engineering specific parts will give a great advantage in competition as well as help students better understand problem solving and build engineering skills.
