I work in a high poverty PK- 1st grade building. The population I work with is fairly transient. It is not uncommon for students to move in and out of the area frequently. Despite those factors, our school is also very high achieving; always ranking high in our county on standardized test scores.
I work with the students in my school individually and in small groups daily on character education. We focus on issues like self-esteem, bullying, hygiene, friendships, organization, study skills and service learning. Many of these students come from difficult family situations, struggle in the classrooms with attention and behavior issues, but will thrive in a one-on-one and/ or small group setting.
