The low socioeconomic status of the community that my school serves means that when I ask my students what their dreams for the future are, I hear responses like, "I want to work at the gas station" or "I want to be a checker at Walmart".
What I want is for my students to be inspired to dream big, set lofty goals and look beyond what the poverty statistics say are the only options for their future. Rather than asking, "Why me?" I want them to ask, "Why not me?".
Offering my students exposure to computer science, coding and engineering opens up a world of skills and opportunities that many of them would never even consider. It's my goal to engage students in the playfulness of robotic engineering while giving them the tools they need to collaborate, solve problems creatively and persevere when their ideas aren't successful on the first try.
