My students have a lot of energy! They are always moving around and looking for ways to let out this energy. After a record breaking winter, with cold temperatures and a surplus of snow, indoor recess was becoming a regular thing. As a K-8 school, the gym is being shared by many people and is usually not open. My students relied on using yoga to help get them moving and finding ways to bring them back down when their energy level was too high.
Even now, with the weather getting nicer, our school yard is not equipped for the number of children at our school. Each grade has a short ten minutes scheduled for recess. There is no field, and a very small playground for the younger students. My students attempt to play soccer and games on the pavement next to the playground, and usually get stopped because their ball has gone out into the street down the hill. It is very difficult to find activities for them given the space we have.
