The E.T. Cyber Cafe will have a positive impact on all students involved in the club as well as the student body, parents and educators. Seventeen percent of Newaygo County residents live in poverty and only 23% of Newaygo County residents have begun or have completed post secondary education. Many students from our district come from a low-income household and do not see higher education as a realistic goal. Educational achievement is the key to economic stability. With this in mind, we would like to begin the E.T. Club; our next generation of innovators. The club's focus would include implementing business and technology skills they learn over the course of time to create the E.T. Cyber Cafe in the school library. The E.T. Club will run all aspects of the E.T. Cyber Cafe and also provide guidance to students, teachers and sometimes parents using the technology in the cafe. The hope is that these students will apply these skills for college readiness and employment opportunities. The need for internet access is huge, especially in our area. For some students, the new E.T. Cyber Cafe may be the only chance to use digital devices and for those students that may not have access to the internet or limited internet services. Access to these devices and the internet will allow students to complete school assignments in the E.T. Cyber Cafe after school hours, therefore giving students opportunities to understand academic material, improve study skills and attitude towards school and teach students that learning can take place anywhere. Completion of homework for our students will also foster independence, develop character traits and proficiency in core subjects; all very important for success in college and a career. The E.T. Cyber Cafe will give all of the students a competitive edge in a technology-dominated market place to better our student body for college and a career-oriented culture as well.
