Everyday my students work in Literacy Centers. One of the centers is the Listening Center where children can follow along while listening to a story being read. A listening center with wireless headphones is just what my class needs. This can provide a wonderful opportunity for children to hear their favorite books read aloud again and again.
Students will also benefit from hearing what a good reader sounds like. We call this "reading fluency."
The more they listen, the greater the likelihood that they will learn new vocabulary words. While listening to stories on CD/cassette tapes it also helps build phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and comprehension.
