I work with a diverse group of second graders that face many challenges not only at school but in their homes and community. Many of my students come from homes without books or family members who can't or don't have time to read with them. Many of my students live in high crime areas. Our poverty level is measured by families eligible for free and reduced-price lunch is close to 100 percent. However, with all these challenges, my students come to school each day ready to learn and read.
