I teach students that score in the bottom 20th percentile on their 8th grade standardized math tests. They typically struggle with math and dislike math, so I believe it is my job to make math FUN and ACCESSIBLE.
Students are curious, they are funny, and they often have short attention spans, which require me to constantly keep myself in check with teacher vs. student talk time. My school has a lot of school pride and despite being a Title I school in Arizona, it received an A ranking last year! Though many believe they will never be good at math, they work hard during class and are unbelievably loyal to each other. With structured partner practice, they thrive because they strongly believe in being a family. They are not afraid to ask questions, and they are not afraid to ask me why the content of the lesson matters, so I am always prepared to explain the WHY because I know that this is what they care about the most.
