As an advanced academic high school, my students are pushed to their intellectual limits. The stress associated with the rigor of our school takes its toll on them. Also, our school is located in an area that has a high poverty population. Thus, many of our students have the added worry of whether or not they will be able to have the resources need to do well in class. Often, we have students who have trouble accessing a functioning computer and have to walk or bus miles to get to a local library. Offering art not only exposes them to a creative outlet that allows them to express themselves in new ways, but the relaxed atmosphere gives them distance from their reality and provides them with the opportunity to explore worlds that are diverse and new.
