My children live in a small, rural town in the northwest corner of Washington State. Some of our children have not traveled the 40 miles north to Canada. Many of their families were born and raised here. As I teach about the world and the seven continents, I realize how much they need to see quality stories, photos and representations of children around the world. How are their lives similar to the lives of my students? How are they different?
Phenomenal, vibrant non-fiction filled with photographs of other places and people - rich, engaging stories with culture and history - these are the hooks I use to interest my children in the world beyond our doorstep. Whether it's seeing how children around the world travel to school, eat and play or learning that school is not an option for every child, I love opening up the world to my students and listening to the resulting conversations and ideas flow.
