Role models are so important for my students. As an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher many of my students will be the first in their families to attend a college or university. The goal is that these students will attend a four year school. Many will consider going out of state, but it is frightening as they are leaving home and may be one of very few low-income or students of color at their chosen school. These students have been in AVID many since 7th grade when they made a commitment to themselves that they wanted to attend college. For many it has been a challenge, to keep up their grades, work and help care for family members. My seniors have taken the challenge and they are almost there.
