A classroom reading area needs to be inviting, organized, and easy to access from their short standing position/height without using step stools to look in the back of the book buckets or the teacher needing to pull the book they choose out. Students will want to go to the area to choose books of their own choice if they can see and reach what they want.
By donating bookshelves to my classroom reading area, you will be giving them the boost of excitement they need to be more independent readers and the access to reach and explore the new reading area all on their own. The bookshelves will also help utilize floor space in the already small classroom space. The addition will add organization and help with boosting spirits to read not only on their free time throughout the day but required DEAR Time (Drop Everything And Read Time). This will also free me up to work with individuals more one on one or small groups during DEAR Time without having to run over and help get a book out from the back of a reading bucket. Plus the students can easily pick books from their level off the bookshelves to choose to take home to read and return to school.
