Literacy research tells us that students are motivated to read more when then receive rewards that are directly tied to literacy. As a reward when my students reach a goal, they will receive a Science Spin magazine. This not only rewards them for working hard, it's another piece of literature they can continue learning from. Research also says that students should be reading informational texts in 50% of their reading. So these magazines are a win-win!
What better way to celebrate and motivate my students' successes than to share their pictures in our room? Seeing themselves as readers is critical in their literacy journey. I'd like to build their confidence, help them to see they are an important part of our classroom, AND represent them fully in our space by capturing big moments in pictures.
