My students are passionate about learning and life; they are tenacious and are hardworking. While I have worked with over a hundred different students in my life, this group inspires me every day. I hear so many stories from my students, which could easily bring them down. However, they demonstrate grit and perseverance through these hard times. My students, even at the young age of six and seven, understand the importance of school and where education can take them in this world.
The students at my school are a hundred percent African American and Latino. Ninety-six percent of the students are considered low income. My school strongly believes in a school community. There are multiple times throughout the week where we focus on school culture and school-wide events. There are three guiding principles of the school: safety, responsibility, and respect. Our students learn what it means to demonstrate and bring these principles into their own lives.
