My school is in a poor, transient populated city. The neighborhood that the school is located in is impacted by violence daily. Despite living in these difficult surroundings my students regularly attend school. They want to learn. School is their safe haven, an escape from the chaos around them. Often times the inappropriate behaviors my students exhibit are just a cry for help. They want more for themselves than what they see around them. We have had countless discussions about their aspirations to be lawyers, nurses, teachers, doctors, or some other type of professional. With proper guidance and supports all of my students can reach their goals.
