My students are 5th graders at an urban public school. More than 75% of our students live in poverty. Each student receives free breakfast and lunch and almost all of my students speak a language other than English at home. Though these characteristics can make school challenging, they certainly do not define who my students are or limit their potential for greatness. My students have phenomenal attendance and a true thirst for knowledge. As a school, we work to nurture a love of learning, academic achievement, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
My students demonstrate P.R.I.D.E. (purpose, responsibility, individuality, determination, and engagement). Each day students pledge, "I believe in myself, and my teachers believe in me, too. I care about my work and all that I do. My purpose is to be a responsible individual determined to be engaged in my learning."
